...two travellers in search of the world's wildlife

Recommended

This is a catalogue of the places we’ve stayed in, eaten at, visited and searched for wildlife. We have included the good, the bad, and the merely indifferent.

The Fat Duck
Location: Bray, UK
Date visited: 15/06/10
We love eating here, nom nom nom!!

Marrick Safari
Location: nr Kimberley, South Africa
Date visited: 27/07/10
We had the Honeymoon Suite, a lovely room in an old country-style farmhouse. We could have had a three-course meal, but opted instead for the braai – they supply the food, we cook it over coals, great fun. Good game drives with good guide, special animals on night drives. Quite chilly in winter

Type: Nature Rating: Good
Isle of Mull
Location: Scotland, UK
Date visited: 01/09/09
Great for otters!

Augrabies Falls Lodge and Camping
Location: nr Augrabies Falls NP, South Africa
Date visited: 03/08/10
Very good value indeed for the smart modern rooms and simple but decent food. Theyre very friendly and upgraded us to the finest room on the second night since no-one else was staying. The bar downstairs can get noisy with locals.
Address: A few kms before the park

Type: Sleep Rating: Indifferent
Aant Kanaal
Location: Upington, South Africa
Date visited: 29/07/10
A very comfortable guest house, fair value for the area.

Type: Eat Rating: Bad
Le Must
Location: Upington, South Africa
Date visited: 29/07/10
The ambience is of fine dining, but the chefs bizarre creations are perhaps a bit misguided. This would be great value if only we hadn not left the place bewildered about broccoli and kiwi fruit on the same plate.

Type: Sleep Rating: Good
Kieliekrankie Camp
Location: Kgalagadi NP, South Africa
Date visited: 30/07/10
This camp wins for epic views across miles of dunes, and being unfenced and only having four chalets it is definitely out in the wilderness. It was also very smartly kept, and in a good location for drives in either river valley.

Type: Sleep Rating: Indifferent
Mata Mata Camp
Location: Kgalagadi NP, South Africa
Date visited: 31/07/10
The chalets here are clean enough, but were designed for inconvenience by an idiot. The camp is a mix of chalets and camping, there are basic facilities but since its on the Namibian border only one route available for game drives.

Type: Sleep Rating: Indifferent
Twee Rivieren Camp
Location: Kgalagadi NP, South Africa
Date visited: 02/08/10
The chalets are a bit smarter than Mata Mata, but it is a big camp with no real feeling of being in the wilderness. Being at the join of the two rivers there are two options for game drives.
