Life in a volcano

Our daytrip to Gunung Batur was brilliant for photography. There was so much to see in the human and the natural landscape. We did have to fend off a couple of touts and putative guides, and since we were there (a) off-season, (b) with our own transport and (c) away from the main tourist spots it gives a hint of how badly the area is plagued with them in the high season.

Flags dance in the breeze over temple roofs, but most of the men seemed to be attending a cockfight
The statues were about the only men around not watching the cockfight
With her command of the language, Maureen ended up having to fend off the occasional tout-on-a-bike
The inside of the crater is a fertile market garden of produce and a handful of villages
Avocados dangling from a roadside tree
An old jeep, past its driving days, does duty now as a clothes airer
A girl in her best clothes, off to the temples with a basket of offerings
The crater lake provides a livelihood for others
All this farming goes on in the brooding shadow of the huge and definitely active current crater
Big though it is, the current crater is only a small mountain in the middle of the vast (unphotographable) old crater - so how big must that eruption have been!?
The mineral-rich soil from that ancient eruption is obviously good for beans
What is this golden and sun-kissed liquor, so artfully displayed? Why, it\'s cheap petrol for motorbikes sold at the roadside in old bottles
There\'s no clever mirror trickery here, it\'s just two bugs... er... kissing. With their bottoms. Moving on...
Look, we caught a tiddler. Although the tiddler doesn\'t seem to have caught anything
Exploring around an active volcano, I guess a \'slight\' adventure is probably about as much as we needed
