Flinders snaps

Only one whole day in the Flinders Ranges, but definitely my favourite bit of our short time in South Australia. And there really is absolutely nothing up here except landscape and a bit of wildlife.

Arid mountains, dirt roads and wide open spaces - proper Outback
Strange vegetation occupies this dry landscape, like these spiky thingamys
This is obviously their season to flower, oozing out big droplets of nectar that filled the bright air with their funky scent
Gum trees grow only in dry river beds, where presumably some water still lies deep beneath
We had wildlife to watch on some walks and drives. This is a Euro, or Wallaroo, last seen in Western Australia
And a trio of Red Kangaroos like russian dolls. If you look carefully, there\'s even one in the pouch
Plenty of small birds survive here too, like the vivid Red-capped Robin
This is a Mulga Parrot, getting some shade
Biggest of all, we bumped into a crowd of emus while walking in the afternoon
On the left, Mrs Spider. On the right, Mr Spider. If I was Mr Spider I would live in mortal dread
Wedge-tailed eagles soared over the hills, looking for carrion expired in the wilderness
Our favourite animal was the Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby though, an icon of the region and no wonder
We were even lucky enough to spot one with a (big!) baby in her pouch
Yet she still managed to take off at a sprint up into the rocky crags they call home
In the background a Euro eyes up the opposition - rabbits being just one of the invasive animals spoiling Australia for the natives
This one shows the short shrubby and grassy vegetation that covers most of the arid Outback
My favourite shot doesn\'t show the Flinders at all, but the dirt road goes ever on
Our steepest hike was up to a view over Wilpena Pound, a huge natural bowl - Maureen got so tired that she started seeing quadruple
The Flinders is definitely a place of panoramas (so glad to have this nifty software that stitches photos together)
