We got to enjoy the “four seasons in one day” of Iceland, as it rained on us leaving Reykjavik, then dried up to be merely moody and cloudy at Þingvellir and Kerid, then abruptly switched to wall-to-wall sun as we reached Skogarfoss and set off on a hike up the Waterfall Way.
This was the highlight of the day by far. Skogarfoss itself is an immense cascade, plunging over a cliff and down to almost sea level, with a rainbow at its foot in the afternoon sun. Loads of people too. But there were less people once we climbed the metal steps up to the top of the waterfall. And there was almost nobody left by the time we’d walked a kilometer or two up the waterfall canyon. This one little gorge contains enough waterfalls for a medium sized country to be proud of. The path continues up and up towards the interior, with a huge ice cap just visible on the horizon, and seemingly around every other corner is a beautiful vista (with or without waterfall).
There were some other cool things about today. The best was having a creme brulee donut for breakfast at DEIG in Reykjavik, which involved them blowtorching the sugar topping of the donut in front of you. Our little farmstay cabin in the middle of nowhere was also pretty lovely.
