Great Ocean Road

We enjoyed our trip down the Great Ocean Road. I’d recommend anyone stick it on their itinerary for a long holiday in Australia. It’s got beautiful seascapes, forests full of walking trails, little towns full of good things to eat (it’s long-weekend territory for Melbournites, you see) and lots of wildlife. Including koalas. Fear their cuteness!

From Melbourne we set off along the Great Ocean Road, which is accurate in all three words
We found ourselves in some eclectic and amiable accommodation along the way, like this retro-Scandinavian-chic cabin
And the next morning we were treated to our first fuzzy-wuzzy snooze-machines. Koalas, in other words
Do not adjust your set, this really is the colour of the Crimson Rosella - found in the same dry forests as the koalas
Could there possibly be anything on this planet more fuzzy than a sleepy koala?
Nope!
Away from the coast itself there were sun-dappled forests to explore
Our favourite walk on the coast was to the Little Aire Falls
And inland of that, a pair of Brolgas - huge Australian cranes
In the damp parts it actually remains rainforest and the autumn had brought out a myriad of fungi
Birds made a chorus of the trees, but as usual were irritatingly difficult to spot
At night we went looking for nocturnal wildlife and said hello to several engaging ring-tailed possums
In the morning we continued along beside the azure ocean under the cerulean sky
We visited some of the splendid sights of the coast - this is Loch Ard Gorge, where two shipwrecked teens sheltered in a cave more than 100 years ago
The aptly named Artillery Rocks, although I must say this looks more like a dragon egg than a cannonball, don\'t you think?
Sunset at the end of the Great Ocean Road, a thoroughly recommended road trip
Portland was as far as we got along the coast, but nobody had seen whales from the lookout beyond this lighthouse for weeks
At Port Fairy we found remarkably placid Black Wallabies, including this old soldier
