Our three day trip to the Amed coast was a great glimpse of the beauty on Bali. I honestly have no idea why any tourists would want to stay around the grubby bustle of Kuta, Sanur, Legian and the rest. But I’m very glad that most of them do!

This year\'s sarong-and-sash sensation is being modelled by Matt at the Goa Lawah temple on the way to Amed
The catwalk audience don\'t know quite what to make of it - astonishment all round
We particularly stopped at this temple because of its famous Bat Cave. No, not the home of the caped crusader
Awwww! Teeny tiny bat-yawn! Surely no-one can suggest bats are anything but cute?

Back to Denpasar soon enough, leaving peace and tranquility behind us
Here we found the royal gamelan laid out in a pavilion on a lake. No, I don\'t know what she\'s up to either
The gamelan is a uniquely Balinese orchestra, mostly made of tuned percussion
The Amed coast has about a half-dozen coves, each crowded with local fishing boats (prahu) and looking like a postcard
Here we found our place of rest, Meditasi, a tiny lodge of four bungalows right by the cove
Every morning we were woken by the fishermen setting out for the day. Being Bali, this was at a civilised 8AM rather than the horrible pre-dawn hour you might expect
Of course we shared our accommodation with wildlife - this is SE Asia after all. Here\'s a lovely huge moth
I still can\'t get over the fact that this view is about five metres off the beach, right outside a convenient cafe
With an air tank instead of a snorkel there would be even more cool stuff to find, no doubt
Vivid fishies everywhere. You can also see a bit of colourful crap here as well - alas, there was a fair scattering of this among the coral
And after swimming with the fishies, Amed has some lovely spots for lunch - from the clifftop we even saw a whale in the distance
On our way back from Amed we saw another beautiful side of Bali - the aquatic green paddy fields in the hills
And we stopped for a rather splendid fish lunch at a local warung, ate sitting on bamboo mats. I did wonder whether we\'d been swimming with his relatives yesterday
