We’re off on a six week trip to SE Asia. The plan is to visit the Philippines, north Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.
The Philippines is a nation of scattered islands, so it looks like lots of internal flights are on the cards. We’re aiming to visit Bohol, a rural backwater island where we might find tarsiers and chocolate hills. Then take a short tour of the mountains in north Luzon, famed for their rice terraces and hanging coffins. Finally travel to Palawan, a distant island with myriad islets and an underground river.
In north Thailand we’ll hire a car and tour the mountainous area around Chiang Rai, before crossing the border into Laos for a two day boat ride down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. We’ll spend a couple of days here in what is meant to be the most interesting town in the country, then fly to Vietnam.
A few days in the city of Hanoi should allow us to enjoy plenty of Vietnamese food. Then we’ll spend a few days around the renowned Ha Long bay. Next, a couple of weeks working our way down the central coast of Vietnam looking for monkeys, caves, blue lakes and ruins. Leaving us in Hoi An, perhaps the most beautiful old city in the country – we’ll see!
Have just had a farewell fish and chip lunch at Heathrow airport, and now we’re on the way.
