We eventually got to sleep at 6am, so inevitably we were a little late getting up the next day. In fact we finally got up at 6pm. Not really applying ourselves properly to conquering this jetlag. Still, Chileans like to go out late for their evening meal and this suited us ideally. In the quieter parts of Australia the restaurants stop serving around 8pm whereas here in Santiago many of them don’t even open until 8pm. We eventually dragged ourselves out into the evening air and found a place called Astrid y Gaston which just happens to be known as one of the finest places to eat in the city. The restaurant had classic old world charm, all the seafood we had for starters and mains was excellent – especially Maureen’s trio of ceviche – and we concluded that this was probably the finest and most expensive meal we were likely to have in South America.
Then we went back to our hotel and back to bed. Actually, that’s not strictly true; it’s 2am now and we’re only just ready to turn in. Jetlag will be defeated tomorrow. But even so: wake up, go out for a fine three course meal, go to bed. What a day!
