Tassie nightlife

Not only did we get to watch Tasmanian Devils on our veranda at Mountain Valley Wilderness, we also saw Duck-billed Platypus in the river nearby and went out for a night drive on which we saw another five species of mammal. Good stuff.

As the sun sets over Tasmania\'s wilderness it\'s time for the native wildlife to appear
First up is the Duck-billed Platypus looking for a shrimp supper, an odd critter if ever there was one
If you\'re confused, that\'s the bill at the front with two nostrils, the eyes are either side of the top of the bill, then its back, then its broad flat tail at the very back
Up in the trees and down on the ground (trying to get squashed on the road) is the Brush-tailed Possum
Less easily seen, and less easily photographed, is the Ring-tailed Possum - note the thin white tail
Call it a cuddly bulldozer or a fuzzy-wuzzy tank, we were delighted to finally see a Wombat
We saw a new hopper as well, the Bennet\'s Wallaby
And right outside our cabin we saw yet more of the ever present Tasmanian Pademelon
But undoubtably the star of the Tasmanian nighttime, the loveable Tassie Devil steals the show
Although he was mainly here to steal all the meat left out on the veranda - we saw eight different devils in all, identifiable by their white patches
It was just amazing watching these fearsome little uglies up so close, and we had to stay deathly quiet and still
Some things are less nice to see up close! \'I sheem to haff shomething caught in my teefs...\'
Probably bits of bone, since they crunched up absolutely every last morsel left out
