Western wildlife

Australia is home to some weird and wonderful wildlife that bears no resemblance to the rest of the world. Western Australia is our first taste, and we’ve found some great stuff.

$We saw plenty of parrots. These are galahs. Galah is Aussie slang for idiot, and I\'ve no idea why$

$And we saw ugly bugs, like this gnarly spider. I haven\'t the first clue whether this one is deadly or friendly$

$Stingrays are definitely deadly, and we all know what happened to Steve Irwin when he played with stingrays, don\'t we Maureen$

$We saw a tawny frogmouth too, though this photo was from a little wildlife rescue centre called Roo Gully. No, it\'s not Oscar the Grouch$

$The ring-tail possum isn\'t coming out to play, cos all the brush-tailed possums stole his territory$

$S\'cuse me, any particklar reason why the loveable grey kangaroo doesn\'t get an entry?$

$The Australian raven, who has a truly pathetic call for such a stern looking bird. It goes something like: \'caw, caw, awwww heck...\'$

$This is the Welcome Swallow, he says \'hi!\' I\'m not kidding, this bird really is called the Welcome Swallow$

$For seabird lovers, the Sooty Oystercatcher. He\'s in the gallery cos I can never resist showing off a bird-in-flight picture$

$One of the many parrots that colour the bush, an Australian Ringneck. He\'s perched on a banksia seedhead - the plants are weird here too$

$Australia\'s only bee-eater. Only species, I mean, obviously not the only one. I think he looks like Roger Federer. I\'ve been in the sun a lot$
