Whole lotta sky

Western Australia has a lot of sky, and lots of it beautiful. We had lots of fun taking photographs and seeing if we could capture the light or the sense of a place.

Let\'s start with those big, big skies
The azure blue over the red earth makes for a great palette
Here the skies vibrate above the strange toothy protrusions of the Pinnacles desert
A lot of the best scenery in Western Australia is attached to the coast
Here we\'re looking out over the Southern Ocean, next stop Antarctica
The storms of the Southern Ocean have carved this massive natural bridge
In contrast, water at its most placid - the salt lakes on Rottnest Island
On the coast the forest gives way to windswept heath land
Thousands of parrots flying home to roost over the town of Dongara
Distinctly Australian pines at dusk
Looking down onto the Murchison River - in flood following a cyclone, chocolate brown with sediment
We\'ve spent the last few days in some of the forests that used to stretch right across Australia
And when it becomes too arid for trees, bush scrub (with obligatory hopper) takes over
Just when you think you\'re wandering through a sage green and brown wasteland, flowers appear
There\'s some good human landscape to see as well - these are fishing boats anchored in Fremantle harbour
An old cabin in the woods, with eight beds but all ours for two days at Dryandra
Amazing how a purple and red sunset can make even a nondescript hotel like Denham look magical
So let\'s close with a handful of sunsets, a bit of a Western Australia speciality
Night falls over the Indian Ocean, seen from almost the westermost point of Oz

    These are delightful. Wonderful skies..
    My kids are enjoying your wildlife pics. I think they are going to know more wildlife than most kids their age thanks to your photos and the write up.

      Haha… well, I’ve been trying to include some informative facts as well as silly photo captions with my wildlife pictures. Looking for dolphins and elephant seals today – though the weather looks a bit unhappy.
