Frozen in the forest

6th March 2011

Okay, actually written on the morning of the 7th.

We’re now staying at Dryandra Forest, another nature reserve on the way back to Perth that also has a good reputation for rare marsupials. The cabin we’ve got is great, with an open fire and an old cooking range, wooden floors and probably possums in the eaves. Or magpies. Anyway, it has a real backwoods feel. We didn’t plan on doing any more self-catering, and it was a Sunday yesterday, so our provisions are rather peculiar. It was cheese omelette with beans and salami last night, it’s looking like cheese omelette with smoked oysters and pan-fried apple tonight.

Not only did we not plan on self-catering, we certainly didn’t plan on staying somewhere that doesn’t have bedding. But hey, it was 28 degrees most of yesterday and we’ve got sleeping bag liners and can make pillows out of our clothing cubes. It’ll be fine. Wow does the temperature ever drop at night in a wood cabin in the woods. We ended up getting fully clothed at 3am and still found it bloody cold getting to sleep again.

One more night, and tonight we are most certainly making use of that log fireplace.

My funky hat goes everywhere with me. Do you think it makes me look like Indiana Jones? I do. No-one else does! Have you chosen a honeymoon spot? New Zealand is nice, although the weather is a bit random.
