...two travellers in search of the world's wildlife

2 May 2011

Grumpians

2nd May 2011

Well, sod the Grampians anyway.

To summarise: we arrived on a beautiful sunny Friday evening, looking forward to a weekend of scenic walks and wildlife watching. The weather was grey and rainy for the whole weekend and there was no-one available who knew anything at all about wildlife. We went out spotlighting anyway in some likely looking areas and saw exactly one tawny frogmouth. This morning the weather has returned to beautiful sunshine and the Parks Victoria rangers will be in attendance at their office. Sod all use to us, as we’ve left.

It was a full day’s driving pretty much, into South Australia and eventually to Victor Harbour where we’re spending the night before getting the ferry to Kangaroo Island tomorrow. We passed through the town of Keith, which reminded us of our stay in Nigel back in South Africa at the start of our trip. It’s quite something to have visited both Keith and Nigel, eh? Keith seemed to be just what you’d expect of small-town Australia; a scattered handful of clap-board houses, a gas station cum shop cum pub, and a

variety of odd businesses relating to agriculture all overlooked by hulking water towers and grain stores.

So, yeah, admittedly it was a day’s driving short on spectacular highlights. Keith, and a giant koala, that’s about it. We had some good music on, the sun was shining, and the endless pastureland and silvery gum trees were a fine backdrop. We also got through most of a packet of bear-shaped sweets.

The annoying thing is, I can tell that the Grampians are a beautiful area and that you could spend a really rewarding few days there. It’s just going to have to be someone else who waxes lyrical about their delights, because weather and weekend buggered it for us. Unsurprisingly there will be no Grampians gallery.
