...two travellers in search of the world's wildlife

30 March 2011

Queen Charlotte march

29th March 2011

Ooo… my legs hurt.

Today the track climbed even higher and the views over the Queen Charlotte Sound on one side and the Kenepura Sound on the other side were even more glorious. The track effectively wanders down a long hilly peninsula of land with these long fingers of sea on either side. In fact the whole Marlborough Sounds area is a complete tangle of islands, peninsulas, inlets and sounds which must have been great fun to survey as a navigator a couple of centuries ago.

Anyway, 8 hours was the suggested time for today’s track and we managed it in 6.5 hours. We stopped for all the views along the way and watched the friendly birds along the track, but nevertheless we walked fast. The trouble is there are no signs to indicate how far you’ve got and we had a set pick-up time for our boat. So we erred on the side of caution and walked like demons. Of course we arrived nearly two hours early for our pick-up. A paddle in the sea seemed like a good way to cool the feet and pass the time, but we soon discovered that sand flies love paddlers and my ankles are itching like crazy now.

So, knackered and itchy. But it’s really satisfying to have walked over 25 kilometres in a day, even if doing it in record time was a bit unnecessary.
