Chepu otters

We came to Chiloe looking for otters, and at Chepu we weren’t disappointed. It also happens to be a stunningly beautiful place (if you are lucky enough to get sun!) which just shows that otters have very good taste. Look at where else they live: the Isle of Skye, Monterey Bay, Okavango Delta, Yellowstone, need I go on?

At Chepu we settled into our cosy cabin overlooking all this beauty
Amazing that the destruction of a landscape by flood could have created so much beauty a few decades on
We were to go searching for otters by boat - our captain was Jorge
As usual it is crucial to start at the crack of dawn - even if otters never seem to show up at the crack of dawn
We saw plenty of birdlife, like this little yellow-billed pintail
And this beautiful local kingfisher
After three days of trying the mirror surface of the water was finally broken by a familiar face
A beautiful animal...
...in a beautiful landscape
There was bird life here as well, like these fantastic Ibis
This is the Southern River Otter, perhaps as rare as the Hairy-nosed Otter of SE Asia
Back at Chepu Lodge we found another endangered species, the Pudu, the world\'s smallest deer
Okay, this may require some imagination... but does this little pudu look a bit like Wallace (of \'Wallace and Grommit\' fame)?
While staying at Chepu we also took ourselves to Punihuil, abandoned by penguins for the winter (and thus abandoned by tourists)
And here we got to see the other local otter, the tiny (but very spiky) Marine Otter
He devoured an entire crab in front of us, then jumped back in to look for more
There are very few places as beautiful as Chepu. Otters have such good taste
Adios
And these Kelp Geese, who come as a sort of salt-and-pepper set of male-and-female
