Subaquatic Galapagos

A visit to the islands of the Galapagos would be memorable enough, but some of the snorkelling we did off their shores was just wonderful.

There\'s as much going on under the water as above it in the Galapagos. Ready to snorkel?
The mixture of cold and warm ocean currents leads to an abundance of fish and sealife
Among the cooler fish we saw was this battered looking Stingray
This little round one is a Golden Ray (spot the sneaky Stingray!)
And this almost invisible and deadly fellow is a Stonefish - at first I though Andreas was joking when he said there was a fish here
Oooo! And a White-tipped Reef Shark, which Wilo had told us was perfectly safe but which still gave me a start when it swam towards me
So what was the best encounter underwater then?
Sealions!
In fact many of them just enjoyed zipping right past us
But our second-best underwater encounter was definitely with the placid and wonderful Green Turtles
Close enough to touch (though that is verboten) and swimming effortlessly in the rolling currents
They watched us madly flippering about and snapping photos, and they didn\'t seem to mind a bit
Effortlessly graceful and swift in the water (at least compared to me!)
They had no problem swimming upsidedown...
...and managed to convince Maureen to copy them, which doesn\'t really work with a snorkel
Eventually there were a whole bunch, at least seven sealions a-swimming
It\'s definitely an hour... okay, nearly two hours... that I won\'t forget
Still, I think Maureen\'s larking kept them more interested than the rest of us who just floated around with cameras
All that time in the water is exhausting - it\'s no wonder sealions sleep so much on the beach
