Augsburg landing

Saturday 2nd September 2023

This is our third visit to Germany. First time was three days wine tasting in the Mosel, based in the ancient city of Trier. Second time was three days exploring Cologne and then Bonn and Aachen. This time we’re touring with mum and dad, from Bavaria eastwards and across the border into Poland. So we landed in Munich, picked up a car (after an unexpected amount of faff in Munich airport) and headed to Augsburg.

Augsburg city centre

Augsburg is a charming small city. Our hotel was a decent but uninspiring one at the shopping centre end of the town, though still only a few minutes walk into the lovely old town. The first thing we did after dumping our suitcases was to go out for a drink at a nearby bar-restaurant. This warmed us immediately to Augsburg: the waiter was friendly and called us “London” after learning where we came from, and we all had large glasses of wine because the barman made a mistake (“don’t worry London, you’ll still be charged for small glasses!”). Good Bavarian white wines, too.

Strolling around Augsburg’s canals

A stroll before dinner showed off a townscape just full of those pastel painted multi-storey buildings with high windows, decorative gables and towering steep tiles roofs that feel totally German to me. Our restaurant was a good pick for a first night, tasty food and friendly service.
